What are ICO’s

ICO stands for Initial Coin Offering.

They are essentially crowdfunding projects, mainly used in the cryptocurrency and blockchain industries.

Companies will release their tokens, usually for bitcoin, but also fiat currencies, to create funding for product development. 

The first ‘token sale’ was held in 2013 by Mastercoin, and has since seen many other projects follow the same course, for example, Ethereum.

These offerings allow audiences to purchase tokens, of which they have full ownership, and companies to raise funding for projects.

It does however have its risks, as these projects do not always succeed. It is reported that in 2017, approximately $6 billion was raised through ICO’s, but just under 50% of those projects failed.

It is important for anyone wanting to buy tokens through an ICO, to investigate thoroughly any company offering tokens through an ICO.

Some analysts and reports suggest that scammers will create hype over a coin, to drive up the price, only to dump the coins for a profit.

However, even knowing the risks involved, researching ICO’s can provide you with an opportunity to invest in the early stages of a project, for a small amount.

There are legitimate companies out there, which are offering tokens to fund the projects of the future, and these tokens offer the possibility of becoming profitable when the project has succeeded. But the goals need to be realistic. The company needs a solid team working on the project and it needs to be relevant and useful. If it seems iffy, there are many more to choose from.
